President's Message

Happy President's Week! 2011 is a mere six weeks old and I am thankful for the blessings each of these days have provided. A new opportunity to meet new people, appreciate the deep friendships of the past, and look forward to making more dreams a reality.

There are many people and organizations in our community working to make it THE most remarkable place to live, work, and play. SEDCOR and our Keizer and Salem Chambers of Commerce work diligently and passionately to bring businesses to Salem and to support the ones we have. They tout the great work and thriving quality of life we have. I am thankful for their advocacy.

And our local hospital has received numerous national awards for their commitment to quality, best practices and customer service. I truly hope none of you need their services, but if you do, I'm thankful that Salem Hospital is here for all of us.

Salem-Keizer schools are among the best in our state and also receiving national recognition for academic achievement for all 41,000 precious stakeholders we call our future. We thank Dr. Husk and her team for putting Salem-Keizer on the map for bold and courageous advancements in teaching and learning.

So, when we celebrate a new year and recite our resolutions, mine is this:

Our community is one of the most remarkable places to do business, live and care, and raise our children. Dale's Remodeling resolves to be part of each of these steps. We want to help all businesses and organizations thrive; we want to support the health and welfare of our community, and will do so through all generations.

We want to make your dreams for 2011 come true, thriving and living in our community-remodeling the home you cherish, or updating the one that meets the needs of your changing family. Modifying your home for comfort, security and independence

Entry Way Options

If your home is your castle, then you should rule within it as long and as independently as possible.

Your castle needs to be adaptable to accommodate the differing needs and requirements of its owner, able to deal with dramatic life changes from sickness and injury, effects of aging, or those supporting other family members affected by these issues.

Making adaptations to your home, or incorporating Universal Design components will help make day to day living possible and safer for everyone. These thoughtful changes in your homes' design and function will increase comfort and security; help you maintain independence and dignity; and enhance the financial investment in the home.

Entrances and bathrooms are two significant areas where mobility is essential.

Ensuring that you can get in and out of your home safely and securely is the focus of this series. Our improvements are structural, but we also recommend features such as grab bars, easy to use lever handles that can be added with minimal expense.

Entrance Options

When modifying an existing entrance, there are many options to create a stepless entrance, including ramps, vertical platform lifts, and landscaping. Each is appropriate for different situations, budgets, and site conditions. Engaging the entire family in the design and selection of the products for a solution is critical.

Site grading and landscaping

Blending landscaped earth pathways, which may include retaining walls, earth berms or a bridge, are a more natural and blended solution for increased accessibility. Gentle slopes can be built without handrails. Landscape solutions may be more expensive than an equivalent ramp, but usually is more attractive and creates a disguise and will have a longer lifespan and require less maintenance.

Ramps

Are the most familiar residential modification for increased accessibility. They can be relatively quick and inexpensive to build. They can also have their drawbacks. Ramps that need to have a higher rise than 30" require more extensive engineering and construction, take more space, and therefore more expensive. They also need upkeep and maintenance to keep them safe. We also recommend that the ramp be designed to look as an integral part of the structure and landscape, so that the homeowner is not labeled as vulnerable.
